Challenge Overview
The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) requires next-generation submarine cable and connector systems for deep-sea deployed systems. Current commercial solutions do not meet the pressure, temperature, and electromagnetic interference requirements of military undersea applications.
Technical Requirements
- Operating depth: 6,000 meters (rated to 9,000 meters)
- Temperature range: -2°C to 4°C sustained, with tolerance to 150°C at connection points
- Data throughput: 10 Gbps minimum over 1,000m cable runs
- Bend radius: 5x cable diameter minimum
- MTTF: >50,000 hours at rated depth
- EMI shielding: MIL-STD-461 compliant
Manufacturing Considerations
NUWC seeks to reduce sole-source dependence on current suppliers. Preference given to companies with demonstrated domestic manufacturing capability and the ability to achieve full-rate production within 18 months of design lock.
Evaluation Criteria
- Technical compliance with environmental specifications
- Manufacturing readiness and domestic supply chain depth
- Cost per unit at production volumes of 500–5,000 annually
- Quality management certifications (AS9100, ISO 9001)
