Challenge Overview

The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) needs persistent, real-time ocean data collection platforms and advanced analytics to support fleet operations, undersea warfare, and safe navigation in contested and uncontested environments.

Data Requirements

Solutions should address collection and analysis of:

  • Conductivity, Temperature, Depth (CTD) profiles
  • Acoustic propagation modeling data
  • Sea surface temperature and salinity
  • Current velocity and direction at multiple depths
  • Bottom topography updates in poorly charted regions

Platform Types of Interest

  • Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) with extended endurance
  • Wave gliders and ocean surface drones
  • Distributed sensor networks with satellite relay
  • AI-based nowcast and forecast modeling systems

Operational Constraints

Systems must operate in denied or degraded communications environments with autonomous data buffering and delayed transmission capability. Power solutions should support 30+ day deployments without recovery.
